Fill & Sign

Everything on the Fill & Sign tab, plus filling the form fields a PDF already has.

Filling form fields

Fields that the form's author created are shaded. Click one and type; Tab moves to the next field. Check boxes, radio buttons, dropdowns and multi-line fields all work. What you enter is written into the PDF when you save.

Form fields can be filled whenever no tool is active. The Current tool box in the ribbon shows Select / fill in that state; press Esc or click the arrow button (Select) to get back to it.

Totals do not add up? Some forms calculate with built-in scripts, and DocuWrit keeps scripts switched off until you allow them. A yellow bar above the document offers Run scripts. See Scripts in Documents.

The Fill & Sign tools

Each tool is a toggle: its button stays lit while it is active, and clicking it again, pressing Esc, or clicking the x in the Current tool box puts it down.

ToolWhat it does
Text boxClick where you want to type. The text sits on top of the page as an annotation and can be moved or edited later. Its size and colour are set in the style group, see below.
X markClick a printed check box to put an X in it. While the tool is on, the small box under its icon sets the size of the X, from 1 (6 pt) to 9 (48 pt); the setting is remembered. The X is drawn onto the page itself.
SignPlace a saved signature, upload a picture of one, or draw or type a new one. See below.
DrawFreehand ink: drag on the page. Thickness and colour of the pen are set in the style group.
HighlightSelect text on the page to highlight it, in the colour set in the style group. On a scan, recognize the text first.
ImagePick a picture file (PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WebP). It is placed once; drag it into position and resize it with its handles.

Size and colour

To the right of the tools sits a small style group:

SettingWhat it changes
Text box: size and colourThe text size in points (pick one from the list or type any size) and the text colour.
Pen: thickness and colourThe line of the Draw tool.
Highlight: colourYellow, green, blue, pink or red.

A change does two things: it restyles the item that is selected (click a text box, a drawing or a highlight while its tool is on), and it becomes the style of the next ones you make. DocuWrit remembers it for next time. While an item is selected, the group shows that item's size and colour.

Signing

The Sign button opens a menu:

  • Your saved signatures — click one, move it to where it belongs and click to place it. Esc cancels.
  • Upload a signature picture — choose a PNG or JPEG of your signature. A white paper background is made transparent, and the signature is saved for next time.
  • Draw or type a signature — opens a dialog where you draw with the mouse or a pen, or type your name in a script style.
  • Remove a saved signature — deletes one from the list.

After placing a signature you can still drag it and resize it; click anywhere else when it is right.

This is a picture of your signature, the same as signing on paper and scanning it. For a signature that proves who signed and that the document was not changed afterwards, use Digital sign.

Saved signatures stay on your computer, in your Windows user profile. They are never uploaded anywhere.

Undo

Ctrl+Z undoes the last change and Ctrl+Y redoes it. The same buttons are in the ribbon on every tab.

Saving

Ctrl+S saves into the same file; Ctrl+Shift+S saves a copy. A dot after the name on the tab means there are unsaved changes, and DocuWrit asks before closing such a tab.

To make a filled-in form final, so the entries can no longer be changed, use Flatten form on the Form Fields tab (see Build Fillable Forms).
